If cost is the thing in the way.

A lot of people decide therapy is out of reach without ever asking. Here is how reduced-fee sessions actually work here, so you know what you're asking for before you send the email.

How it works

I hold a set number of slots at a reduced rate. The number stays fixed so I can keep the practice running; when one is open, it's yours for as long as you need it, not for a trial period that reverts to full price.

Reduced-fee sessions are the same length and the same work as any other session. There is no shorter version, no lighter version, and no difference in how much attention you get.

What I'll ask

Not much. A rough sense of what you can manage per session and what's going on financially, in a sentence or two. I don't ask for pay stubs or tax returns. I'd rather trust you and occasionally be wrong than make you prove hardship to get help.

If your situation changes later, in either direction, tell me and we'll adjust.

Check your insurance first

Before assuming full price, call the number on your insurance card and ask whether you have out-of-network mental health benefits. For a lot of plans, you pay me directly, submit the superbill I give you, and get a meaningful share back. I wrote out exactly what to ask and what the math can look like. Ten minutes on the phone sometimes solves this entirely.

If nothing is open right now

Sometimes every reduced-fee slot is full. When that happens I'll tell you straight, offer to put you on a short list and reach out when one opens, and give you two or three other names in Denver who do good work at lower rates. You won't be left with a polite no and nowhere to go.

How to ask

Say it in the first message. "Cost is a barrier for me, is there any flexibility?" is a complete sentence and all the explanation needed. You can also bring it up on the free fifteen-minute call. Nobody has ever been turned away for asking.
