Is Telehealth Therapy Right for You?
It's one of the most common questions I hear on a first call: "Does telehealth actually work as well as being in the room?" The honest answer is yes, for most people, most of the time. Here's what's true about virtual therapy, and what to know before your first session.
It's Real Therapy, Not a Lesser Version
The research is clear on this: outcomes for individual and couples therapy delivered over video are broadly comparable to office-based work for the majority of presenting concerns. Telehealth isn't a downgrade or a workaround. It's a different format for the same relationship and the same work.
Who Telehealth Works Especially Well For
For a lot of people telehealth isn't a compromise. It's what makes consistent therapy possible at all. No commute means no lost hour on either side of the session. It removes the geography question entirely, so you're not limited to whoever happens to practice nearby. It travels with you, which matters if your schedule or location changes often. And for some people, being in their own space actually lowers the guard enough to go deeper, faster, than an unfamiliar office would.
If Privacy at Home Feels Like a Barrier
This is the most common hesitation I hear, and it's a real one. Not everyone has a door that closes on demand. A few things help: sessions from a parked car, a walk with headphones instead of sitting still, a white-noise app or fan under the door, or simply naming it upfront so we can plan the session around it. It's rarely an all-or-nothing problem once we talk through the specifics of your space.
Setting Up Your Space and Routine
It's worth being intentional about a few things: a space where you won't be interrupted or overheard, headphones if walls are thin, and a few minutes built in before and after the session instead of going straight from a work call into therapy and back. These sound minor, but they meaningfully change how much you get out of the hour.
What a First Session Looks Like
You'll get a secure, confidential video link before each session. No app download required, just a click from a laptop, tablet, or phone. We'll spend the first session getting oriented: what brought you in, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping is different in a few months. From there, sessions run weekly or biweekly, at a pace that fits your life.
If you're still not sure, that's what the free 15-minute call is for: a chance to talk through your situation before deciding.
